Dear friends,

We are deeply honored to welcome you to our 29th Annual Kenneth B. Schwartz Compassionate Healthcare Dinner. Your support of this event is a testament to the strength of our community and our shared belief that everyone deserves access to compassionate, high-quality healthcare.

This evening is more than just a gathering; it is a celebration of the collective impact we make when we come together with compassion and purpose. Your generosity and dedication play a crucial role in supporting our mission to advance compassion for patients, care teams, and their healing relationships.

Tonight we celebrate the recipients of the National Compassionate Caregivers of the Year® Award. These exceptional individuals have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to fostering healing for patients, families and even entire communities. These honorees’ remarkable stories of kindness, steadfast support for colleagues, and courageous leadership in the face of adversity serve as inspiration for us all. Their achievements highlight the transformative power of empathy and care in the healing profession.

As you enjoy tonight’s program, we hope you will be motivated by these stories and recognize the difference that your generosity has on the health and well-being of the community. The funds we raise tonight will provide vital resources and programs to shift mindsets, heal our health systems, and elevate the well-being of health workers, enabling them to continue to provide compassionate patient care. Your contributions directly impact countless lives through programs like Schwartz Rounds® and Stress First Aid. Tonight you will also learn about our ambitious plans to expand our services and enhance the quality of care worldwide.

Looking to the future, we continue to be inspired by Ken Schwartz’s experience; as he so eloquently wrote, “Each one of us wants not simply the best possible care for our body but for our whole being.” We appreciate you joining us as champions of compassion for all who seek and provide healthcare.

What We Do

History

The Schwartz Center reflects the vision of Ken Schwartz, a Boston healthcare attorney who died of lung cancer at age 40 and found that what mattered to him most was the human connection he felt with his caregivers, which he said made “the unbearable bearable.” He established the Schwartz Center in 1995 – just days before his death – to ensure that all patients and families are treated with compassion.

25th Anniversary NCCY Award Recipients

Since 1999, the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare has honored outstanding healthcare professionals who display extraordinary devotion and compassion in caring for patients and families.

This is the 25th anniversary of the National Compassionate Caregivers of the Year Award, which recognizes extraordinary healthcare professionals from across the country who embody the characteristics of compassionate care and whose professional achievements have helped to create healing healthcare environments for patients, families, colleagues, and communities.

The Schwartz Center is grateful to CRICO for its generous support of the National Compassionate Caregivers of the Year Award. For close to 50 years, CRICO has provided industry-leading medical professional liability coverage, claims management, and patient safety resources to all of the Harvard medical institutions and their affiliates, and is a recognized leader in evidence-based risk management.

In Memoriam

We are grieving the loss of several longtime supporters and friends of the Schwartz Center, including:

Ruth Kilduff, RN, was a longtime Board Member and Board Chair. Since 2005, we have been the beneficiary of Ruth’s generosity, energy and wisdom. She volunteered countless hours, shared valuable insights, and inspired many others to support our mission. Her mentorship nurtured the next generation of healthcare leaders, ensuring that her legacy will continue to shape healthcare for years to come. Ruth was instrumental in expanding the Schwartz Center’s reach and ensuring the organization’s longevity.

Ruth Koblenzer was the mother-in-law of Ken Schwartz, and mother of founding Board Members Ellen Cohen and Margie Stanzler. She was a supporter of the Schwartz Center since our inception, and we are grateful for her longtime advocacy.

Jack Connors, Jr., will be remembered for his extraordinary generosity and vision.  In addition to his philanthropic support, Jack gave the Schwartz Center his time, wisdom, and encouragement, inspiring others to support our organization as well. His legacy will live on through the countless lives touched by his charitable work, his compassion for people, and his advocacy for healthcare, education, and our community.

Joe Chazan, MD, was a founding donor to the Schwartz Center who was committed to Ken Schwartz’s legacy and devoted his career to the practice of delivering compassionate healthcare. Among his many contributions to the Schwartz Center was the founding of a pilot program at Brown University School of Medicine to imbue compassion into medical training.

Bill Melanson was a longtime supporter of the Schwartz Center, along with his partner and longtime Schwartz Center Board member Joyce Murphy. He will be remembered for his generous spirit and caring nature.

Special Thanks

The Schwartz Center is grateful to everyone who helped make this 29th Annual Dinner a success by contributing time and in-kind support.
